TIP No. 12

The Cook Should Ideally Face East While Cooking

Cooking is not treated as an ordinary activity in Vastu. It is seen as a process through which energy, nourishment, and intention enter the food that supports the whole family. That is why the direction faced while cooking is given importance. Traditionally, the cook is advised to face
East whenever possible. East is associated with Surya, light, freshness, vitality, and lifesupporting movement. When food is prepared while facing East, the kitchen often feels more active, clear, and naturally aligned. It is believed that this direction supports a healthier and more sattvic atmosphere around food preparation. By contrast, cooking while facing South is generally avoided in traditional guidance because South carries a heavier quality and is not considered as supportive for daily nourishment. This should not be treated as a reason to panic if the kitchen layout is already fixed. Vastu is most helpful when applied intelligently and calmly. Even when the direction cannot be changed fully, improvements in cleanliness, lighting, ventilation, and order can still make a meaningful difference. The deeper point is simple: food carries the energy of the space in which it is prepared.
